UN 1267 — petroleum crude oil

UN 1267 is petroleum crude oil, placarded class 3.

UN 1267 is petroleum crude oil. It is class 3. Unit trains of crude made this number familiar: a long cut of tank cars with the same placard, each car still carrying its own reporting mark and number.

Crude is not gasoline, even though both are class 3. The identification number is how you keep the two straight when the cars are the same color and the placard color matches.

The tank specification is a separate stencil. Arguments about DOT-111 and later specs are about the tank, not about whether 1267 means crude. It does.

Identification only. If a car is leaking or in a wreck, move away and call your local emergency number. Responders use the Emergency Response Guidebook. This page is not that book.
