Class 3
Class 3 — flammable liquids
Class 3 is flammable liquids such as gasoline, crude oil, and diesel fuel.
Class 3 is flammable liquids. The diamond carries a 3. On the railroad this is the placard of gasoline, crude oil, diesel fuel, and a long list of solvents and chemical mixtures.
The identification number is what distinguishes those commodities. 1203 is gasoline. 1267 is petroleum crude oil. 1202 is diesel fuel or heating oil. 1993 is the generic "flammable liquid, n.o.s." — not otherwise specified — which means the papers, not the placard alone, name the actual material.
A class 3 placard does not tell you the tank specification. A DOT-111 and a DOT-117 can both carry class 3 commodities. Read the spec stencil if you want to know the tank. Read the placard if you want to know the hazard on this trip.
Identification only. If a car is leaking or in a wreck, move away and call your local emergency number. Responders use the Emergency Response Guidebook. This page is not that book.
