UN 1005 — anhydrous ammonia

UN 1005 is anhydrous ammonia, a toxic gas, typically placarded class 2.3.

UN 1005 is anhydrous ammonia. It is a toxic gas and it is placarded as class 2.3, not as a fertilizer slogan and not as a flammable liquid. The car is usually a pressure tank car.

People meet ammonia cars often enough that the load gets treated as ordinary. The placard says otherwise. It is a poison-by-inhalation gas. Identify it from a distance.

Don't confuse 1005 with 1075. Both can be pressure tank cars. 1075 is liquefied petroleum gas, a flammable gas. The middle digit of the class, and the four-digit number, are the difference.

Identification only. If a car is leaking or in a wreck, move away and call your local emergency number. Responders use the Emergency Response Guidebook. This page is not that book.
