UN 1830 — sulfuric acid

UN 1830 is sulfuric acid with more than 51 percent acid, placarded class 8.

UN 1830 is sulfuric acid with more than 51 percent acid. It is a class 8 corrosive. Weaker sulfuric acid solutions can carry a different identification number, so 1830 is specifically the stronger acid, not every jug of dilute sulfuric.

Sulfuric acid is one of the classic tank-car commodities. The cars are often in dedicated service, and the specification stencil plus the placard together describe the move: this kind of tank, this material, this trip.

Don't call every black tank car with an 8 an acid car. Sodium hydroxide is also an 8. The four digits settle it.

Identification only. If a car is leaking or in a wreck, move away and call your local emergency number. Responders use the Emergency Response Guidebook. This page is not that book.
